Hi, I’m Kevin Koza, a self-taught oil painter based in Phoenix, AZ.
I picked up painting in 2019 as a practice of introspection and embodiment. I didn’t initially start painting to “become better at painting,” and instead I simply wanted a practice to remain mindful and stay in an unthinking flow.
I was fortunate to have picked up the practice just before the pandemic. I spent long hours after work painting from the Arizona room in a house with friends, soaking up the AZ sunsets and monsoon air.
I started selling my work in 2020 right before moving to San Francisco. During my time in the Bay, I worked as a software engineering during the day and crafted folds of oil paint into the late evenings. I started attending art fairs and I saw my sales increase, so in 2024, I decided to move back to Phoenix and make a career of selling paintings.
Since then, I’ve been producing work out of my studio in Midtown Phoenix, connecting with clients and expanding my practice. I have a strong pull towards Abstract and Impressionist-leaning work, but I’m always branching out from my typical landscapes and still life into new subjects, like figures, florals, and other conceptual work.
My philosophy as an artist is that your “compass of taste” is the most important—it takes listening to your intuition to be fortunate to craft compelling paintings. We can always learn new techniques, but momentum and remaining in an embodied state is what enables us to make art that speaks to us.
I’d love to connect with you— feel free to reach out!
