- Alex, painter:

I found you on my page that was a video of you announcing that you were going to be hosting lessons.

I messaged you, I did some research, checked out all of your work, I loved your style.

This wasn’t my first painting session—I did dabble with oil painting a little bit and I sort of knew and was self-aware of what I needed to improve on, the things I needed to learn— basically, I knew all of the gaps that needed to be filled.

So you asked me to think about the rubric and the curriculum, what you wanted to cover throughout the entire day. I asked if you can do a 4-5h session.

I definitely wanted to cover the fundamentals of oil painting as well as composition and finally some of the techniques that you thought were very important for me to know or techniques that are unique to you that I could adopt and incorporate into my work.

It was exactly what I wanted, you were very detailed. Also, it was a very hands-on lesson. While I was painting, I wanted you to direct me and guide me what are best practices, and if you wanted to jump in with a brush and tell me what you thought would be a good suggestion, I welcomed that and that’s what happened. It was a great session.

I think what was important is that you actually taught me a new technique to how to figure out a color palette. Basically you are picking the color palette for the entire piece, the work, which was actually new to me. I thought that you’re just picking up colors as you’re painting. So that was strategic and something I had never picked up in any other place.

We talked about blocking and the techniques on how to do an underpainting. How much solvent to mix in, how much paint to mix in, all that—it was very, very helpful. I didn’t expect that you were going to cover that specifically but I’ve been learning new things each step of the way.
