Digital composition planning is an optional step in painting. If you don’t have a tablet, you can feel free to follow along with the concepts without attempting to copy, or you can use a medium like pastel or graphite to perform sketches and blocking. Understand that we can consider oil painting much like “cutting out blocks of layered paper,” where we start with the crudest, broadest shapes and increase the granularity as we get closer to our finished result.
